Welcome to 8th Grade Art at EMS!
We started out the school year by creating collages that represented who we are. Students went on a magazine scavenger hunt to answer questions about themselves. Then they took their photos, arranged them, and added flare. We didn't finish there! See September to find out what happened when their collages were complete!

With their completed collages from the first week of school, students then chose a word that was characteristic about themselves. They cut the letters out of their collage and defined the word on the border of the letters. The results show a small representation of who they are. Check out some examples of their beautiful results!
We also created sketchbooks to help us organize our rough drafts and notes for the year. Our covers include the student's hand, designs, and their thoughts about what art is, where it is, and why it is important.
We also worked on creating our portfolio folders in a Jackson Pollock style. We learned about warm, cool, and neutral color schemes too. Check out the slideshow below for some of our artists in action!
After observing details from the beautiful fall foliage, we went to work on creating our own leaf inspired paintings. Students learned how to make a watercolor wash, use gesso for texture, and use some value shading with water soluble graphite. Below are some completed projects.
After studying aerial perspective in mountain landscapes, students created their own beautiful paintings incorporating texture. Below are a few examples of our results.
Students continue to build their skills with watercolor paint and drawing. Check out some of our Sign Language Hands with a textural watercolor background!
In addition to our amazing field trip to Larkin Arts and The Arts Council of the Valley, we have been busy creating amazing art projects at EMS! This month we have been finishing our crayon pillow batiks. Our melted crayon on fabric designs were able to make a crayon monoprint on paper. We have also been working on 2pt perspective drawings this month. Check back soon for some examples of finished work. Below you can see some of our monoprints.
Our batik pillows are finished! Below are a couple of examples. We are currently working on a clay project, creating symmetrical candle holders. We will be finishing the clay project up within the next month!
During the month of March, student have been busily working on finishing their symmetrical clay candle holders. Below are their beautiful results. Students have also studied one point perspective and are continuing to complete city drawings. Stay tuned!
During the month of April we have been working on another clay project funded by REFI. Stay tuned for some photos of our clay banks. Currently we are working on our Selfie Portraits. Check out some of our selfie photography that will help to inspire our drawings!
It has been a slow work in progress, but students have finally completed their city drawing and coloring their symmetrical designs. We have been working no these in between clay projects. Check out some of their work!
