8th Grade Art Syllabus
Dear Parents and Guardians:
This year your child will be taking Art! I am very excited about diving into some new art projects this year. Your child will be making a variety of projects throughout the year that experiment with many different art materials as they learn about The Elements/Principles of Design, Art History, and proper Art Vocabulary. Eighth grade art students will work with the Visual Arts Standards of Learning for their grade level. A complete list of the Visual Art Standards of Learning can be found on the back of this paper. Students will be working with colored pencils, markers, oil pastels, paint, clay, and much more! Because they will be working with such messy materials, I provide paint shirts that they are welcome and encouraged to use. If they do not want to use one of my shirts, they may bring in their own old shirt to store in the classroom.
Students can expect 3-6 major projects each marking period, and several smaller assignments. Larger assignments will receive up to 100 points each, and smaller assignments will receive up to 10 points each. Each project will be graded on following a set of criteria for the particular project. Below is my grading scale:
A 90-100: Meets all criteria
B 80-89: Missing one criteria
C 70-79: Missing two criteria
D 60-69: Missing three or more criteria
F 59-0: Not turning in an assignment
Major projects are due at the end of the grading period. Because some students work at different speeds, I do not give definite due dates throughout the marking period. I may chose to roll a project grade over to the following marking period if I feel students have not had ample time to complete the assignment. You may check grades on powerschool as I update them at least once a week.
At the end of the school year I plan to show 8th grade student art work before the Spring Awards Ceremony. Please be on the lookout for more information regarding times when you can see the artwork from Elkton Middle School students.
I have an EMS Art website at trackywest.weebly.com/. The link can also be found on our school website under student activities. I will be giving updates and showing photographs of student work as we complete them. Please visit the website at anytime.
Every EMS student has a school planner. This planner will be used daily in this class and time given at the end of class for the student to put in any needed assignments, late work, upcoming events, and may be used for communication.
Cell phones and other personal electronic devices will only be used in class with direct instruction from the teacher.
Please fill out the attached Art Permission form. This form will allow me to display your child's artwork if needed throughout the school year. If you do not want to grant permission on the form, please write me a note so I know that you have seen it. I will send out a separate letter if your child's artwork is selected. Some competitions will require an additional form to be filled out.
I look forward to a great year! Contact me at school with any questions you may have!
